Wawasee Sports Wrap: April 18
Girls Tennis
A win at one doubles by Kabrea Rostochak and Kendra Doerr was the lone highlight of a 4-1 Concord triumph over Wawasee.
The Warrior duo rallied from a 6-2 first-set loss to come back for a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) marathon to give the one doubles court a win over Concord for the second straight year.
Otherwise, there was absolutely nothing but Concord success on the other four courts. The Minutemen shut out Wawasee 6-0, 6-0 on all four other courts in wins by Alana Brubaker, Regan Landis and Maya Klopfenstein in singles play and the doubles team of Allison Murphy and Meaghan Godzisz.
The Concord JV won all nine of the courts.
Wawasee (2-6, 1-1 NLC) will visit Manchester on Thursday.
Boys Golf
Wawasee’s dual season opened with a bang, beating Central Noble 179-232 at South Shore.
Zach Leedy was the medalist and leader for Wawasee with his 41. Jared Krugman was next at 44, followed by Dillon Drake and Cameron Brill at 47 and Kobe Jones at 48.
Scoring for Central Noble included Taylor Strange (54), Lucas Smith (55), Alan Golden (57), Tanner Vandegraft (66) and Kasey Pfleinder (78).
“We played a little better tonight,” said Wawasee head coach Steve Coverstone. “We actually had three good scores at our three-four-five positions through five holes, but we let it slip a little bit.”
Wawasee (1-0) will compete again Saturday at the Whitko Invite.
Girls Track
Results were incomplete from Tuesday night’s NLC track meet at Plymouth, but Wawasee did have a few names and feats of note.
Jada Parzygnot set the school record in pole vault with her clearance of 10-0, breaking the former mark of 9-4 held by Sarah Rozow.
Elizabeth Zorn was part of three wins, taking the one-mile and two-mile races and helped the 4×800 relay to a win. Joining Zorn on the relay were Kenzie Smith, Lila Gregory and Caitlin Wortinger. Hannah-Marie Lamle claimed the long jump.
Wawasee head coach Scott Lancaster noted the electronic results to the meet were not made available afterwards to the coaches.
“Jada was just on very, very well tonight,” Lancaster said of Parzygnot. “Her steps were perfect and her plant was really nice. We had moved her up not too long ago on a larger pole and she started holding back a little bit more and it’s giving her a little bit more push and so you know her attempt to break the school record at 9-6 was really kind of an easy make for her. Ten feet was much the same thing and you know 10-6 after she got over the initial shock how high it was, she made a really, really good attempt on her third attempt in and came close to making it. We look forward to what she’s going to do here in the next few weeks, it should be pretty exciting.”
Wawasee will compete again Saturday at the Turtletown Classic hosted by Churubusco.
