Wawasee Sports Wrap: April 14
Baseball
It’s been a story Wawasee has told a few times in recent years. Pairing up with one of the premier baseball programs in the state, Wawasee kept pace, but couldn’t figure out how to beat Norwell. The most recent chapter happened Friday in a 3-2 loss in Ossian.
Norwell scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning after Wawasee had carried a 1-0 lead into the final six outs. An error and double by Quentin Middleton got the Knights on the board, then a walk to Levi Young – which followed with Young stealing two bases including home – mixed in with a sacrifice fly from Colin Schwartz had the Knights pull off the second come-from-behind win the Warriors have surrendered this week.
Carter Woody started his first career game and allowed just two hits in three innings. Josh Slabaugh took the loss, giving up the damage in the sixth.
A pair of errors in the fourth allowed Wawasee’s Jake Crousore to score the game’s first run. Spencer Prescott scored on a Rylan Kuhn single in the seventh, but Kuhn was stranded as Norwell escaped with the victory. Prescott had two hits, a walk and stole two bases.
At Wawasee in JV baseball, East Noble topped Wawasee 8-5. Jacob Krugman was cited for his pitching performance in the loss for the Warriors. Wawasee drops to 2-1 with the defeat, and will look forward to its rivalry matchup Monday against Warsaw. The varsity (3-3) will also host Warsaw Monday afternoon in the Northern Lakes Conference opener.
Softball
Wawasee suffered its first loss of the season Friday afternoon, a 3-2 defeat at Manchester.
Ellie Milam scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning for the winning run. Milam reached on a walk and made her way around the bases on two groundouts before scoring on a Meghan Fretz wild one.
Wawasee had tied the game in the sixth when Madie Wilson singled and scored on an Amber Lemberg sacrifice fly. Back-to-back doubles from Hannah Haines and Lemberg in the fourth inning got Wawasee on the board.
Milam added an RBI double and Makenzie Day homered for the Squires.
Brooklyn Howard outdueled Fretz in the circle, Howard gave up seven hits and struck out nine while Fretz allowed just four hits and fanned five.
Wawasee falls to 5-1 with a matchup Saturday morning at home against Triton.
