Warsaw Sports Wrap: April 13
The Warsaw girls tennis team rolled to a 5-0 win at Columbia City Thursday evening.
The Tigers lost a total of just four games on the five varsity courts in the non-conference victory.
Liza Lewis and Ella Knight led the way for Warsaw as each posted 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles action. Lewis won at No. 1 singles play and Knight at No. 2.
Alyssa Zellers notched a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 to complete the singles sweep for the Tigers.
The Tigers were dominant on the doubles courts as the duo of Colette Smith and Athena Schlitt won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 and the tandem of Maddie Ray and Sophie Schlitt notched a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2.
Warsaw won 9-0 in junior varsity action. Winning in singles play were Libby Jenkins, Jasmine Baker, Reagan Merchant and Jaya Panicker. Also winning were the doubles teams of Rachel Yeager and Rachel Boyle, Izzy Ray and Amy Herendeen, Sophia Park and Bailey Roulo, Charlotte Grandon and Addison Marshall and Katrielle Rodgers and Sophie Olson.
Warsaw, now 2-0, will host its eight-team varsity tournament Saturday. The Tigers then open conference play versus Plymouth Tuesday night. That league match will now be played at Warsaw at 5 p.m.
Baseball
The Warsaw baseball team dropped its home opener by a 10-0 count to Huntington North in six innings.
The game was tight through five innings before the Vikings plated eight runs in the sixth inning.
Warsaw, which drops to 0-2, was held to just four hits in the game.
Jordan Steffensmeier led the Tigers with a double.
The Tigers host Columbia City Friday and South Bend Riley on Saturday morning.
Huntington North won the junior varsity game 12-3. Joe Wilkinson had three hits, including a double, for Warsaw. Noah Burgh and Matt Shoemaker each had two hits.
The Warsaw freshmen team improved to 2-0 with a 13-3 win over Wabash. Zach Weaver notched the pitching win. Gage Lyon and Jacob Hutchinson each went 2-3 with two RBI and Conner Bale was 2-3 for the Tigers.
