Whitko Sports Wrap: April 13
Boys Track
The Whitko boys track team enjoyed a win over Rochester Thursday night. The Wildcats won 14 events en route to their third Three Rivers Conference victory of the year.
Whitko swept the field events with Gavin Howard leading the way. Howard took first in shot put with a mark of 44-10 and won the discus throw with a distance of 144-11. RJ Patrick was first in pole vault by clearing 10 feet. Zack Freel was tops in high jump at 5-4 and was also a winner in the 400 dash (55.66). Garrett Elder (20-4.5) took first in the long jump. Elder also won the 100 dash with a time of 11.22.
Colin Brass was first 1600 meter run at 5:20.4 and the 800 dash with a time of 2:23.6. Shad Ebbinghouse took the top spot in the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.9. Alex Wilson ran a 23.12 to win the 200 dash while Logan Busz clocked an 11:57.6 in the 3200 meter run.
In the relays Whitko was first in the 1600 and 400 while Rochester won the 4×800. Rochester’s Ben Perez won the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.31.
Whitko (3-0, 3-0) competes with Manchester, Lakeland Christian and Northfield next Thursday.
Girls Track
The Whitko girls track team picked up a win over Rochester as well Thursday evening. Kaitlyn Reed stole the show for the Wildcats as she won she events on the night. Reed took first in long jump (15-5), high jump (5-4) and 100 dash (13.00).
Susie Sickafoose, Sarah Walters and Lyndsey Sapp each enjoyed a pair of individual wins. Sickafoose won the 200 dash (27.07) and 400 dash (1:03.8). Sapp took first in shot put (31-5) and discus (113-3). Walters, meanwhile, was first in the 3200 meter run (13:26.7) and 1600 meter run (6:01.5). Charlotte Cripe was the other individual winner for the Wildcats as she took first in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 1:00.7.
Tennis
The Whitko girls tennis team continued its winning ways Thursday night. The Wildcats defeated Northfield 5-0 for a solid conference win.
Morgan Keirn defeated Sydney Prater 6-3, 6-1 at one singles while Delaney Keirn defeated Kandra Stout 6-1, 6-4. Jackie Werstler picked up a win over Maddie Garrett at three singles with a 6-0, 6-0 decision.
On the doubles courts it was Jessica and Gracie Hook that won their first match of the season, battling back from a loss in the first set to beat Macie Sears and Erin Whetstone 1-6, 6-1, 6-0. At two doubles, Jenna VanCuren and Manon Sonneville defeated Audrie Randel and Lilly Haupert 6-3, 6-1.
The junior varsity came away with its second win of the season, defeating the Norse 4-1. Winning for the Wildcats were Natalie Iholtz, Blair Creamer, and Kayla Schipper.
Whitko (3-0, 2-0) returns to action Saturday at the South Side Invitational starting at 9 a.m.
Baseball
On the diamond it was another big win for the Whitko baseball team. The Wildcats run-ruled Lakewood Park 11-1 in six innings Thursday night.
Bailey Platt picked up the win with five innings of work, recording four strikeouts along the way. The Wildcats put six on the board in the first inning with RBIs from Drew Bradford, Alex Robbins, River West and Spencer Sroufe. Robbins and Austin Hollowell were each 2-3 with three RBIs at the plate in the game.
Whitko (7-0) hosts Heritage for a double header Saturday.
