Silver Lake Plans Spring Cleaning
SILVER LAKE — Spring cleaning was the main topic at the Silver Lake town council meeting held Wednesday, April 12. Silver Lake will host its annual spring cleanup day Saturday, May 6. Items need to be set out early Saturday morning for pickup.
Prohibited items include paints, oils, tires, televisions, computers, microwaves, large furniture, large appliances and lawn waste such as leaves, grass and limbs. Items containing freon will not be accepted.
Silver Lake resident Joyce Greer has organized a “Care for Our Neighbors” work day to be held starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 22. Anyone who would like to participate by helping Silver Lake residents in need of assistance with mowing, raking and general cleanup is welcome to join in. Please contact Greer at (574) 268-4714 if you are interested in volunteering for a few hours or the whole day. Residents who would like to receive help on that day should also contact Joyce before April 22.
Two sealed bids were received for the solid waste disposal for 2017. The first bid came from Advanced Disposal, Claypool, bidding $44,466.48 for the year. The second was from Stafford’s Solid Waste Service Inc., Warsaw, for $44,541.00 for the year. It was agreed upon by council members to continue services with Stafford’s, with council member Phil Shalley pointing out, “We’ve been happy with Stafford’s for many years now.” Representatives from Stafford’s were in attendance at the meeting and offered to bring in some extra containers to assist with Greer’s “Care for Our Neighbors” work day April 22.
Saturday, May 13, is the date for the third annual Silver Lake Fire Department auction fundraiser. The event is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. and end at 7 p.m. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for kids age 12 and under. The meal includes sloppy joe sandwiches, hot dogs, potato salad, chips and drinks. Items to be auctioned off include, but are not limited to, a one night stay at Oakwood Resort, King’s Island tickets and a picnic table from Wabash Valley Manufacturing, Silver Lake.

- The next regular meeting will be held at 7 p.m Wednesday, May 10.
- Council members unanimously agreed to purchase three tamper-resistant dome cameras to be installed at Rambler Park. This was determined to be a necessity due to the fact that people have been pointing the current cameras downward and then “doing things” to the park.
- An issue with the Silver Lake tornado siren was discovered during the most recent testing. Cost of a new control board for the tornado siren is $2,332.38 and this was approved.
- Town employee health insurance will be continued through United Healthcare.
