Warsaw Sports Wrap: April 11
The Warsaw girls tennis team started off its season with an impressive win in comeback fashion Tuesday night.
The duo of Colette Smith and Athena Schlitt rallied for a three-set win at No. 1 doubles to lift the host Tigers past Fort Wayne Canterbury 3-2.
Smith and Schlitt trailed 3-0 in the final set before rallying for a 6-4 win to cap a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win for the clinching point for Warsaw. Junior Smith played No. 2 singles a year ago and Schlitt, the lone senior on this year’s team, played No. 1 doubles.
The Tigers, who won both sectional and regional titles last season, claimed a pair of singles wins in dominating fashion. Junior Ella Knight won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 and freshman Alyssa Zellers notched a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 for the hosts.
Warsaw’s Liza Lewis lost 6-1, 6-1 to Kyra Foster at No. 1 singles action.
Canterbury also claimed the win on the No. 2 doubles court as Jiya Kashyap and Carmen Gnagy topped Rachel Boyle and Maddie Ray 6-1, 6-1.
Warsaw won the junior varsity action 7-3. Winning for the JV Tigers were Libby Jenkins and Reagan Merchant in singles play. Also victorious for the hosts were the doubles teams of Rachel Yeager and Sophia Schlitt, Amy Herendeen and Izzy Ray, Sophia Parke and Jaya Panicker, Sophie Olson and Jennifer Straight and Emma Hoff and Kat Josells.
Warsaw plays at Columbia City Thursday night.
Boys Golf
The Warsaw boys golf team collected a pair of wins in its first triangular of the season.
The Tigers shot a 177 to best Northridge (192) and Mishawaka Marian (199) in varsity action at the Elcona County Club in Elkhart.
Sam Yeager and Tommy Meier each fired a 43 to finish with varsity medalist honors for the Tigers.
Luke Johnson finished with a 45 for Warsaw in the pair of wins. Tim Rata shot a 46 and Jacob LaLonde a 49 for the Tigers.
The Warsaw junior varsity team also posted two wins, shooting a 185 to top both the Raiders (224) and the Knights (241).
Luke Delp of Warsaw was the JV medalist with a 40. Chase Byron had a 46 and Zach LaLonde 48 for Warsaw. Noah Pequignot shot a 51 and Brian Elliott a 54 for the JV Tigers.
Warsaw returns to action in the Don Dicken Classic at Stonehenge on Saturday.
