Graham Enjoys One Final Game
MISHAWAKA – Madi Graham has made a lifetime of memories playing the game she loves.
The former Warsaw basketball standout made sure that she added one final one to her collection too Tuesday night.
Graham was all smiles all evening long as she took part in the sixth annual McDonald’s Michiana High School All-Star Basketball Game held at Bethel College.
For the record, Graham scored six points in her final prep game as her Gray team lost a 75-72 final to the Red team in the contest played on Mike Lightfoot Court in Gates Gymnasium in the Wiekamp Center.
The final stat sheet did not matter one bit though to the sweet-shooting former Tiger guard.
“I just wanted to come out here and have fun tonight,” said Graham following the game. “I love the game and this was a last kind of hurrah for me playing it.”
Graham had an outstanding prep career for coach Michelle Harter. The talented, hard-nosed guard helped the Tigers go 20-4 her senior season. She averaged 11 points-per-game and earned second-team honors on the Ink Free News All-Area team. Graham, a three-year starter who scored almost 700 career points, also helped Warsaw win a Class 4-A sectional title in 2015.
Graham is making a smart, yet tough decision, as she decides to give up playing competitively to focus on her education in college. She plans to attend either Purdue University or Bethel College and hopes to be a physician’s assistant.
“It was a hard decision, but it’s just no practical for me to play basketball anymore,” related Graham, who also played golf at WCHS. “It just comes down to my education. I’d rather focus on that and having good grades and getting a good job in the future.”
Graham hit the first shot of the game Tuesday night, one of her trademark treys. She hit another 3-pointer later in the first half as her team led 24-18 after the opening period and 40-30 at halftime.
Graham was having so much fun competing for the final times that she even found time to laugh after shooting an air ball on a triple try in the third quarter. She looked at her bench and flashed a huge smile following the miss.
“I just decided to jack it on that one,” said Graham with a smile. “I heard my Dad saying shoot to stay hot. I made two threes and I shot two airballs tonight too.”
Nicole Konieczny, who led South Bend St. Joseph to a Class 3-A state championship, led the winning Gray team with 16 points. Asia Strong of South Bend Riley scored 13 points and Alex Bope of Oregon-Davis 10 for the winners.
Konieczny hit 4-4 free throws in the final 12.1 seconds, including a pair with just 1.7 ticks left, to seal the win.
The Red team, which led 69-67 late in the contest, had a chance to tie at the final horn. A trey try by Brooke McKinley of Northridge from near half court hit off the rim on the final shot of the night.
The NorthWood duo of Taitlyn Trenshaw and Savannah Feenstra each scored three points for the Gray squad. Feenstra also had seven rebounds.
Warsaw star Dayton Groninger scored nine points for the Red team. Former Tippecanoe Valley star Anne Secrest had five points and a game-high 11 rebounds for the Red team.
Kristen Hunt of Elkhart Central led the Red team with 13 points.
Graham, who was scheduled to take a visit to Purdue today, knows she has gained much from her time on the court.
“I learned how to work hard and I also learned a ton of leadership skills that are going to be super valuable to me in the future,” said Graham of playing hoops.
Graham’s father Joe was a standout player at Grace College.
“The thing is that I have such great memories of playing the game. All the games traveling around when my Dad was coaching me. My relationship with my parents grew so much through basketball.”
