Grace Softball: Lancers Earn Newest Sweep
MISHAWAKA – Grace’s softball team picked up its second straight sweep on Monday, defeating Bethel 7-3 and 10-1 on the road.
The Lady Lancers (13-12, 6-4 Crossroads League) needed a late-game rally in the opener to down the Pilots, and Grace used that momentum to dominate Bethel in the second game.
After leading 2-0 through the top of the fifth, Grace suddenly found itself behind. The Pilots (1-18, 1-9 CL) plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth, benefitting from two errors by Grace to take a 3-2 lead.
The Lady Lancers responded with urgency. Grace pounded out five runs in the sixth inning to run away with the victory.
All five runs in the inning came with two outs. After Grace’s first two batters flew out in the inning, Grace’s rally was jumpstarted with two straight hit batsmen.
Emily Bobb singled to load the bases, and Mariah Roman and Hannah Herbster hit safely in consecutive at-bats to drive in all three runners. Abby Mozingo then connected on a two-run single to the outfield to polish off Grace’s five-run inning.
The Pilots had a single in each of the last two innings, but Grace’s defense kept the two baserunners on first base en route to the win.
Hannah England pitched the complete game, allowing just five hits with three strikeouts to get the win.
Bobb hit 3-for-4 with two runs and a steal, and Mozingo was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Olivia Scarbrough batted 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Herbster had two hits as well.
In the second game, Erin Lawhon and Chandler Elliott combined to throw a one-hitter. The game was called after six innings due to the run rule.
Grace’s bats were hot throughout the game, connected on 14 hits and 10 runs in the six innings. The Lady Lancers scored a run in five of the six innings.
Bethel’s only hit of the game came in the first inning. Beyond that, Erin Lawhon and Chandler Elliott handcuffed the Pilots. The duo walked one. Lawhon tossed the first four innings, and Elliott pitched a perfect final two innings.
Elliott also was strong at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 3 runs, 2 RBIs, 1 triple and 1 double. Scarbrough hit 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored, and Clarissa Knight was 2-for-3 with two runs.
Ashley Kleinbub had two hits and two steals, and Michaela Lee 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
