Wawasee Softball: Late Kick Sends Wawasee To Win
TOPEKA – It took a little while to get going, but once Wawasee did, it looked in form. A late rally lifted Wawasee to an 11-3 softball win Saturday in its season opener at Westview.
Wawasee patched together a nine-run sixth inning to break open the game, shaking off the rust after a slow start. Westview had led 3-0 heading into the fifth, where the Lady Warriors from Syracuse pieced together two runs in the fifth before clubbing its way to a big lead in the sixth.
Kayla White led the visitors with two hits and three RBIs and Meghan Fretz added a hit and two RBIs. Fretz also worked the circle for the win, striking out eight and allowing just three hits, none after the fourth inning.
Madie Wilson and Ale Brito each scored two runs for Wawasee.
Adrianna Sharick had two hits and two RBIs to pace Westview.
Wawasee, which finished 22-6 a season ago, will open its home calendar Monday with a visit from Lakeland. The Lady Warriors will also be home Tuesday against West Noble and on the road at Elkhart Central Thursday before Spring Break.
