Warsaw Fourth Grader Has Brain Tumor Removed, Receives Support From Officers
WARSAW — A Facebook page has sprung up asking police and sheriff departments to donate patches to an 11-year-old Warsaw boy who just underwent brain surgery.
On Friday, Feb. 25, the fourth grader at Lincoln Elementary School Drake Price was diagnosed with a craniopharyngioma brain tumor after several weeks of not feeling well. On Monday, Feb. 28, he underwent a 13 and a half hour surgery at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis to remove the benign brain tumor.
The weekend of his diagnosis, he informed doctors that he wanted to a be a police officer. In honor of Price’s dream, the Facebook page “Drake Strong” began asking for patches to be donated to Drake from police departments all over the world. The patches will be used to make a quilt for Price.
On March 12, a post revealed another obstacle Price has had to go through in the healing process, “Please continue to pray for Drake. He now has an even longer road ahead due to a mini stroke. Please God heal our boy. Keep him strong through this journey.”
Even though the surgery was deemed a success, Price has a lengthy recovery ahead of him. Price and his parents will return home to continue the recovery process. They will have to make the trip to Chicago five times a week for the next eight weeks to complete radiation treatments.
Police Departments from all over have been showing their support. One post on the Facebook page said that a police officer from Tennessee wanted to come to Riley and bring a SWAT truck that Price could check out. A police department from Indianapolis visited Drake and brought him gifts. Many police agencies have sent Drake patches as well.
One post on the Facebook page said, “This boy is one special little boy who is and already has made an impact on so many … and the police officers who are being their awesome selves and showing him what true heroism is … my heart is so happy tonight!”
A fund has been set up to help Price’s family with medical expenses.
