VERO BEACH, Fla. – Grace’s spring break trip ended in style as the Lancers beat Miami-Hamilton 9-8 in extra innings on Saturday.
The Lancers, who went 5-1 at historic Dodgertown this week, won in the 10th inning. Gavin Bussard had the game-winning moment, hitting a walkoff double to secure Grace’s win.
The game started scoreless for the first two innings. Hunter Ackerman eventually plated in the third inning off a wild pitch to give Grace a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Xavier Harris gunned down a runner at home to maintain Grace’s 1-0 edge.
Miami-Hamilton struck back in the fifth, scoring six to take a commanding lead.
The Lancers responded with a big inning in the bottom of the sixth. Jason Stevens had a two-run double, Ackerman drove in a run, and Cam Maxwell had two RBIs to move Grace back on top, 7-6.
Kyle Brunner then held Miami-Hamilton scoreless for two innings of relief in the seventh and eight innings, and Grace scored again off a sacrifice fly from Maxwell to make the lead 8-6.
Miami-Hamilton rallied to tie the score 8-8 in the top of the ninth. Grace was unable to win the game in the bottom of the inning, sending the game to the 10th.
Logan Swartzentruber pitched an effective 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 10th. In Grace’s turn at the plate, Matthew Warren led off with a single. Bussard took care of the rest, hitting his game-winning double to cap off a strong week in Florida for the Lancers.
Grace will return to the Midwest next week. The Lancers play at Judson on Wednesday before kicking off Crossroads League action during the weekend at Bethel.
