Triton Set To Host Strong Regional Field
BOURBON – Triton High School is set to host a strong Class 1-A boys basketball on Saturday.
The field for the second step in the state tournament series boasts a trio of ranked teams.
Tri-County, ranked No. 2, will meet Gary 21st Century Charter in the opening semifinal game at 10 a.m. The second semifinal will pit No. 10 Oregon-Davis versus Lakewood Park Christian. The regional finale is slated for 7:30 p.m. Saturday with the winner advancing to the Class 1-A North Semistate on March 18 at either Lafayette Jefferson or Huntington North.
Gary 21st Century is the defending regional champion at Triton. The Cougars beat host Triton 74-62 in the semifinals and then topped South Newton 82-66 in the title game a year ago. South Newton beat Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian 51-46 in the other semifinal.
Gary 21st Century, which sports at 20-6 mark, has won its last eight games. The Cougars, who lost in the semistate last year 103-80 to eventual state champion Liberty Christian, won the Kouts Sectional title last weekend.
Tri-County boasts the best record in the field at 23-2. The Cavaliers have won eight straight games and claimed the sectional hardware at the Caston Sectional.
Oregon-Davis is not stranger to the surroundings at Triton. The Bobcats, who are 20-6, beat South Central (61-44), Argos (63-55) and the host Trojans (42-31) in the championship game to win the Triton Sectional championship.
Lakewood Park Christian sits at 17-8 after claiming the first sectional title in program history. LPC topped No. 7 Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian 77-75 in the title game of the Bethany Christian Sectional.
