WARSAW — We will pause in our Pet Portrait series this week to give you an opportunity to enjoy some local art flavor and exhibits that are going to be available for you to visit. Next week we will return to our fascinating study of artists and the pets they included in their work.
For the second year in a row we will be exhibiting some creative efforts by Grace College Art students. The exhibit is free and will be held at the downtown Warsaw City Hall Art Exhibit space you have all come to love and enjoy. The exhibit will be in two phases, so be sure you return to see this very talented work. Kim Rieff, Art Department Head and her staff have enjoyed this creative group of students and you will also like their work. This exhibit will be going up on March 15 and available for viewing 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The March exhibit at the Lakeland Art Gallery 302 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw is another you will want on your “to do” list. This exhibit features work by Jacob Shriner. Shriner, a student at IPFW in Fort Wayne, credits Don Swartzentruber as a valuable mentor.
The young artist, born in 1988 lives and works in Northern Indiana. He is a close student of Post-impressionism and German Expressionism and once you view his work, as in the photos included with this article, one can immediately see that influence. Shriner graduated from Warsaw High School in 2006. He will soon complete his BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) degree and has nearly fulfilled the requirements of having a concentration in painting and drawing. Most artists have an artist statement. Shriner is no exception. He writes: “My work primarily focuses on existential issues of identity, human vulnerability, and man’s relationship with his own interior self, his physical body, and the exterior world.” Shriner goes on to talk about how he likes to bring out meaning and self-awareness through his studies of import in intellectual subjects that may include conflicts that he tries to capture in his work.
Next week: Another pet portrait. Wait’ll you see this one!
