Two Arrested After Stealing Alcohol When EBT Card Funds Were Insufficient
PIERCETON — Two individuals from Pierceton have been arrested after stealing food and alcohol from Walmart after being notified they had insufficient funds on their EBT card to pay for their items.
Cherry Lynn Pollard, 9567 E. Adams Road, Pierceton, was arrested for theft, Anthony Pollard Jr. 9567 E. Adams Road, Pierceton, was arrested for criminal conversion.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, on Feb. 4, officials responded to a theft at the Warsaw Walmart.
A loss prevention officer told police Cherry and Anthony Pollard entered the self-check-out lane and began scanning food items totally $182.49. The female scanned her EBT food stamp card to pay for the items. She scanned the card multiple times without the payment going through. The register stated there was not enough funds on the card to pay for the items.
This action flagged a cashier to come to the Pollard’s lane. The cashier tried to slide the card again, but continued to be notified that sufficient funds were not available on the card. The Pollard’s ended up leaving the store with the items without paying for them. Officers obtained footage of the theft.
A Family and Social Services Administration investigator advised the card had been used prior to this incident on Jan. 19. During that transaction, sufficient funds had not been available to purchase the items. Surveillance video showed Cherry using cash to pay for the remaining balance in cash. This demonstrated that Cherry knew the procedure when she spends more than the EBT card balance.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, after she used the EBT card and cash to pay for the items on Jan. 19, Cherry was seen on the footage leaving the store and walking back into the store, selecting $64.84 worth of liquor. She then left the store without attempting to pay for the alcohol.
Both were booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on Feb. 28.
