Elkhart Basketball Sectional: Goshen Rallies To Sideline Concord
ELKHART – Hoosier Hysteria tipped off in thrilling fashion at North Side Gym Tuesday night.
A layup at the final horn by senior Mitchell Walters lifted Goshen past Concord 40-38 in the opening game of the Class 4-A Elkhart Central Sectional.
Walters’ heroics, off a pass from Will Line, capped a comeback from a 13-point second half deficit.
Goshen (14-9) advances to play Elkhart Memorial (11-11) in the first semifinal game at 6 p.m. Friday. Memorial beat Goshen 58-52 five weeks ago.
The sectional continues tonight with Elkhart Central (19-2) facing Penn (10-12) at 6 p.m., followed by Warsaw (14-9) versus Northridge (13-9). Tonight’s winners face off in the second semifinal game Friday night. The sectional final is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.
Concord, which finishes at 8-15, led 29-16 early in the third quarter.
Goshen rallied in the final half and tied the game at 38-38 on a pair of free throws by Line. After a Concord miss and a Goshen timeout, Line drove the length of the floor and floated a pass to Walters, who made the game winner.
Concord led 12-11 after the opening period and 25-14 at halftime. Goshen cut the deficit to 31-26 at the end of the third stanza.
Concord hit just 9-18 free throws in the game, while Goshen was 9-10 from the stripe.
Line led Goshen with 18 points. Walters had nine points and 10 rebounds and CJ Detweiler nine points and nine caroms for the winners.
Brandon Emerick led Concord with 12 points. Denzel Halliburton had 11 points for Concord, which loses seven seniors.
