Parkview Warsaw Introduces 3D Mammography
WARSAW — Parkview Warsaw has introduced the area’s first 3D mammography screening, which utilizes advanced breast tomosynthesis technology that allows physicians to make a more accurate diagnosis. Compared to 2D testing, the 3D exam is clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers and reduce the number of women asked to return for additional testing.
“We’ve seen a high demand for services at Parkview Warsaw, ranging from imaging to emergency care, and as our presence in the community grows, so does our pledge to serve. This new technology is a testament to our commitment to meet the community’s needs and serve them in ways that result in reduced delays and better outcomes,” said Jeff Rockett, director of operations, Parkview Warsaw and Parkview Whitley Hospital.
The 3D mammogram is completed similar to a conventional 2D screening. A technologist positions the patient, compresses the breasts and takes images from various angles. The 3D exam takes only a few seconds longer than the 2D exam and allows physicians to examine breast tissue layer-by-layer. In 2D mammography, dense or overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks.
“Statistics show that one in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime,” said Amanda Lord, imaging manager, Parkview Warsaw. “This exam offers better, earlier detection, that could save a life. While 2D imaging is effective, it can lead to more false positives, which means more testing. The 3D imaging allows us to see more the first time, giving the patient a faster diagnosis and, more importantly, increased peace of mind.”
3D mammography screening is covered by Medicare and many private insurers. A physician referral is not necessary. To schedule an appointment, call (877) 225-5747.
