Triton Basketball: Trojans Put Away Pesky Clinton
BOURBON – Clinton Central may not have the pedigree within the IHSAA, but the Couriers have given fits to some of its elder opponents. Triton found the Couriers bit pretty hard in a 36-33 Trojans win Saturday at the Trench.
With wins over Jimtown and Tippecanoe Valley already this season, Clinton gave Triton all it could handle. Triton, however, took away Clinton’s top option, Nathan Stutzman, forcing someone else to beat them. Stutzman was held to 13 points under his season average by scoring just 10 points on 4-5 shooting. Benson Yoder and Caleb Schrock, Clinton’s secondary options, combined for 21 points, but both were under their season averages.
Triton countered with another huge game from Zac Pitney, who was 10-22 from the floor to tally 23 total points. Pitney also had four rebounds and two steals. Clinton held Grant Johnson to just four points, 11 points under his average.
The Trojans led 23-11 at the half, but had to hold on in the fourth quarter as Clinton closed on a 9-3 run.
Triton has won nine of its last 10 games and moves to 13-5 overall. Clinton drops to 17-5.
In the JV contest, Triton had a much easier time of things with a 53-28 win. Ethan Berry took the lead for the Trojans, scoring 18 points to go with six steals and five rebounds. Kaden Atkins added nine points. Branden Troyer led the Couriers with 10 points.
Triton will host Rochester Tuesday night.
