Goshen Sectional: Penn Rolls In Opener
GOSHEN – The Penn girls basketball team began its postseason push in impressive fashion Tuesday night.
The defending state champion Kingsmen rolled past host Goshen 53-28 in the opening game of the Class 4-A Goshen Sectional.
No. 10 Penn, now 19-4, advances to play Elkhart Central (12-9) at 6 p.m. Friday in a semifinal matchup.
The Kingsmen bolted to a 9-2 lead to open the game Tuesday night and were never threatened. Penn led 14-6 after the opening period and 24-9 at halftime.
Penn, which has won six straight sectional championships, hit 17-19 free throws in the fourth quarter to finish off the dominating win.
Sara Doi popped in a game-high 19 points to pace coach Kristi Ulrich’s team. Lindsy Kline, the lone senior for Penn, finished with 18 points. Doi went 12-12 from the line, including 10-10 in the fourth quarter from the stripe.
Penn finished 22-26 from the line in the win. Goshen was just 6-16 from the stripe in the game.
Ashton Ellis had seven points to lead Goshen, which finishes at 8-15. Aylissa Trosper added six points for Goshen.
The sectional continues Wednesday night as No. 7 Northridge (23-1) faces Concord (4-18) at 6 p.m., followed by Warsaw (19-3) versus Elkhart Memorial (13-9). The winners of those two games will play in the second semifinal game on Friday night.
The sectional championship game is set for Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
