Girls Basketball
Whitko girls basketball team showed no mercy to Maconaquah Saturday night. The Wildcats cruised to a 61-21 victory over the Braves.
The win closes the regular season out at 19-4 for the Wildcats, tying the program record for wins in a season. Whitko was led offensively by Brianna Cumberland’s 15 points. Aly Reiff added 12 while Hanna Yohe scored 11.
Whitko finishes its conference season with an 8-1 mark. The Wildcats play Fremont Tuesday night in the opening game of the sectional at Central Noble.
Boys Basketball
The Wildcats suffered a tough loss at Maconaquah Saturday night, falling 61-57.
Whitko was led by River West’s 19 points. Alex Robbins and Nate Walpole each scored 17.
The loss drops Whitko to 3-3 in the Three Rivers Conference and 8-7 overall. Whitko plays at North Miami Tuesday. Maconaquah (9-6, 6-0) plays at Tippecanoe Valley next Saturday.
Whitko’s JV won 39-33.
Wrestling
The Whitko wrestling team competed at the Carroll Sectional Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats had a rough day but managed to get one wrestler through to the regional.
Isaac Walter represented the Wildcats well at 182 pounds. The sophomore pinned Noah Stirien (Fort Wayne North) in quarterfinals then used a 5-4 decision to get upset No. 2 seed Lucas Hook (Concordia) in the semifinals. Walter fell to top-seeded Stephen Nix by fall in the championship match.
Walter is the only Wildcat to move tough Logan Busz will serve as a second alternate at 120 at next week’s regional, also held at Carroll.
