Valley Basketball: Ladies Steamroll Southwood
WABASH – The Tippecanoe Valley girls basketball team put an exclamation point on another conference title Saturday night.
The Vikings clinched at least a share of the league championship by crushing Southwood 77-28 in a Three Rivers Conference contest.
Valley, which improves to 18-4 overall, goes to 8-0 in league play. The Vikings, who have won 27 in a row in TRC action, clinched their third straight league title.
The Class 3-A No. 8 ranked Vikings can finish undefeated in the conference for the third straight year with a win at home Thursday versus Manchester in the regular season finale.
Valley rode a huge first half to the rout over Southwood. The Vikings led 31-7 after the opening quarter and then outscored the Knights 22-0 in the second period for a 53-7 halftime lead.
Everyone got into the act for coach Chris Kindig’s team, which was state runner-up two years ago and lost in the regional final a season ago.
Emily Peterson paced the Vikings with 13 points. Hannah Dunn and Addy Miller each scored 10 points and Meredith Brouyette nine. Sophie Bussard had eight points and Anne Secrest seven for the winners.
Dunn also had eight rebounds, while Secrest had seven to go with five assists. Bussard grabbed six rebounds and Brouyette had four assists.
Valley shot 30-62 from the field, including 9-21 from 3-point range. The Vikings were 8-9 from the line.
Ashley Parson led Southwood, which calls to 9-10 overall and 2-5 in the TRC, with six points.
The Vikings, who were coming off a 47-38 TRC win at Class 2-A No. 1 Whitko on Thursday night, sit atop the league standings at 8-0. Whitko is in second place at 6-1. The Wildcats finish league play by hosting Wabash Friday and playing at Maconaquah on Saturday.
The junior varsity from Tippecanoe Valley beat Southwood 40-30. Makenzie Woodcox had a great game for Valley with 16 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Jillian Walls had 11 points and Sarah Tucker added nine points.
Valley plays at Wawasee Tuesday night.
