TRC Swimming: Record Setting Type Of Day
BUNKER HILL – The records fell early and often at the 2017 Three Rivers Conference boys and girls swim championships Saturday afternoon at Maconaquah.
In just its second year as a 10-team conference, the TRC swim had 16 of the 24 events raise a new standard, all of which were established last season. Natural progression would lend to such a trait, but still showed the overall quality being put together in the conference.
The Maconaquah boys medley relay team started the bell ringing with a new mark of 1:45.15, the beginning of a banner day for the Braves. Michael Miller, who was on the medley team, also broke records in the 50 free (21.74) and the 100 (49.87), in both cases edging Tippecanoe Valley’s Chase Brower, who was second in each at 22.32 and 50.33, respectively. Dalton Outlaw led a Braves sweep in diving with a record-setting 350.70, topping his old standard. Valley’s Zach Hodge was fourth at 240.15.
In all, Maconaquah scored 416 points, well ahead of Rochester’s 271 and Valley’s 183 to compromise the top three places.
Rochester’s Jeff Ruppert had record swims in the individual medley (2:14.48) and the backstroke (59.00) and teammate Mason Brady set the standard in the breaststroke (1:06.59).
Valley’s boys output had its medley relay team place second at 2:00.91, 200 free relay team place fourth at 1:56.24 and the 400 free relay team place third at 4:17.82. Daniel Alexander was third in the butterfly at 1:04.69.
The girls almost rewrote the entire conference record book, adding new ink to nine of the 12 events. Rochester was at the forefront of the feats, setting seven. Two swimmers had two apiece, with Abbie McCarter going 2:21.35 in the IM and 1:10.83 in the breaststroke and Madelyn Sailors going 24.66 in the 50 and 56.21 in the 100. Emma Feldman broke the 200 free mark at 2:08.36 and teamed with Sailors, Sarah Schaller and Kennedy Campbell in the 400 relay for a 4:03.14. Adriann Shepherd also went 6:01.69 in the 500 for another Zebra title record.
With all those numbers, Maconaquah still stacked up enough points elsewhere to win the title over Rochester 381-366. The Braves had two records set with Abby Shrock in the backstroke at 1:07.14 and Raygan Plothow in diving at 395.20.
Valley’s Olivia Livengood was a champion in the butterfly, going 1:08.06 for her first conference title, and was fourth in the IM at 2:34.19.
The Valley 200 free relay was fourth at 2:27.24 and the 400 free relay was third at 4:25.73. The Lady Vikes finished fourth in the team scoring with 158 points.
Tippecanoe Valley will return to Maconaquah for a dual meet on Wednesday and the girls take part in the Warsaw Girls Swim Sectional on Feb. 2 and 4.
