Whitko Basketball: Ladies Notch Key TRC Win
WABASH – The Whitko girls basketball team showed its resiliency Saturday night.
The Class 2-A No. 1 ranked Wildcats bounced back in a big way after a tough home loss to conference rival Tippecanoe Valley just two nights earlier.
Whitko used a strong second half effort to top host Northfield 57-48 in a key TRC matchup.
The Wildcats improved to 17-4 overall, tying last year’s record win total, and moved to 6-1 in league play to take over second place in the conference standings.
Whitko trailed 28-22 at halftime before opening the second half on a 12-1 run to take the lead for good. The Wildcats outscored the hosts 16-6 in the pivotal third period.
Brianna Cumberland was dialed in from distance to lead the winners. The senior canned six treys in scoring a game-high 23 points for the Wildcats.
Aly Reiff netted 16 points as she hit 7-9 free throws for the winners. Emalee Duggins scored eight points and Hanna Yohe six for the Wildcats.
Ariel Dale and Kelcie Thompson each had 14 points to pace Northfield, which drops to 14-7 overall and goes to 6-2 in the TRC.
Whitko closes out its regular season by hosting Wabash next Friday night and then playing at Maconaquah in a girl/boy doubleheader on Saturday night.
Northfield plays at TRC Rochester on Thursday night.
