Warsaw Basketball: Tigers Fall In OT
CROWN POINT – A grueling stretch of games ended in a tough loss for the Warsaw boys basketball team Saturday night.
The Tigers, playing for the fifth time in the last nine days, came up on the short end of a 50-46 final in overtime to Class 4-A No. 12 Crown Point.
Warsaw, which had won its last five games, used a huge fourth-quarter rally to force the extra session. The Tigers trailed 36-25 in the final frame before closing the period with a 15-4 run to tie the game at 40-40 to send it to overtime.
Crown Point, which improved to 13-2 with its fourth straight win, outscored the Tigers 10-6 in the overtime.
Warsaw, which beat conference foe Concord at home Friday night, trailed 7-2 after the opening quarter and 15-10 at halftime of the game which had been rescheduled after being postponed in December due to weather. The Tigers shot just 4-22 from the field in the first half.
Crown Point, which was coming off a 59-40 win at Chesterton Friday night, led 29-25 at the end of the third period. The Bulldogs opened the fourth period with a 7-0 run to take their biggest lead of the night before the Tigers stormed back.
Warsaw star Kyle Mangas led all scorer with 24 points. The senior guard was 7-22 from the field, including 1-7 from 3-point range. Mangas went 9-9 from the free throw line and also had five rebounds.
Mangas moved past Ron Brandenburg into eighth place on the program’s all-time career scoring list. Mangas now has 1,160 points. Brandenburg, a 1981 Indiana All-Star, had 1,149.
Asher Blum scored 10 points for the Tigers. Jeremy David had six points and nine rebounds. Nolan Groninger scored four points and Jack Rhoades two.
Warsaw finished 15-48 overall from the field, including 2-12 from distance. The Tigers were 14-17 from the line and had 30 rebounds and eight turnovers.
Crown Point, which lost 46-33 to Warsaw in the regional finale last season at Michigan City, got 16 points from Sasha Stefanovic and Ken Decker. Senior Stefanovic, a 6-4 guard, has received several Division I offers. Andrew Kenneally had 14 points for the winners.
Crown Point shot 17-35 from the field for the game, including 5-15 from distance. The hosts were 11-13 from the line and had 23 rebounds and 10 turnovers.
The Bulldogs have lost to Pike (67-62 in overtime) and Michigan City (56-53) this season.
Warsaw won the junior varsity game 41-35. Landen Ferber had 11 points and Trevor Rumple and Tyler Metzinger each had eight to lead the winners.
Warsaw will host Class 3-A No. 1 NorthWood next Friday night in a key Northern Lakes Conference clash. The Tigers and the undefeated Panthers are tied atop the NLC standings at 4-0. NorthWood improved to 14-0 with a 60-49 win at Lakeland Saturday night.
The Tigers, who have won the last two NLC championships, have won 18 in a row in league play.
