Mevis, Jensen Honored by IFCA
WARSAW – WCHS football standouts Andrew Mevis and Michael Jensen are among a plethora of players from the Northern Lakes Conference honored by the Indiana Football Coaches Association.
Warsaw seniors Mevis and Jensen headline an impressive list of area gridders named to the Region 2 team by the IFCA for the 2016 season.
Mevis capped an outstanding career with a big final season as the kicker for the Tigers. He drilled 43-45 PATs and hit 9-12 field goals this past fall. Mevis tied the school record with a 51-yard field goal and also tied the single-season school mark with his nine field goals. Mevis, who handled all the kicking duties for the Tigers, played in the Under Armour All-American Game in Florida on Jan. 1.
Jensen had a record-setting senior year while playing quarterback for his father Phil. Jensen threw a single-season school record 25 touchdown passes. He finished with 2,004 yards passing and also rushed for six touchdowns.
Mevis was named as the kicker on the Region 2 team, while Jensen was the at-large choice to the offensive unit.
Warsaw finished 6-5 in the fall, losing to Homestead 52-27 in a Class 6-A sectional championship game.
A trio of players from the Class 4-A state runner-up NorthWood team earned honors. Chosen from the Panthers were tight end Drew Minnich, quarterback Trey Bilinski, and offensive lineman Caleb Newcomer.
NorthWood coach Nate Andrews was selected as Region 2 Coach. Andrews guided the Panthers to a 14-1 mark, which included the Northern Lakes Conference title, along with sectional, regional and semistate championships. NorthWood lost to Roncalli 34-22 in the Class 4-A state title game.
Other players from the NLC named to the team included offensive lineman Jorge Quintana and inside linebacker Caleb Koss of Plymouth, wide receiver Rummel Johnson and punter C.J. Detweiler of Goshen and defensive lineman Chance Wilson and free safety Anthony Kyle of Concord.
Kaitlyn Hurd of Warsaw was named as the manager for the team.
Mark Kerrn of Jimtown was tabbed as an assistant coach for the squad.
