Doriot Files Bill to Extend RV Sales Tax Exemption
INDIANAPOLIS – State Sen. Blake Doriot, R-Syracuse, recently filed a bill that would extend the Recreational Vehicle sales-tax exemption.
Under Senate Bill 172, if a resident of another state purchases a RV or cargo trailer that will not be registered in Indiana, customers will not pay Indiana state gross retail tax.
“I hope this bill will encourage anyone out of state to purchase a RV without fear of spending more money to get it home,” Doriot said. “The RV industry has a large economic impact in northern Indiana, and we should support the Hoosiers who rely on these jobs.”
Before 2004, RV dealers were exempt from collecting Indiana sales tax on every RV sold to those living out of state. This prevented customers from paying a sales tax in Indiana and the state where they reside. This changed after a lawsuit involving sales tax on a car, which affected RVs since they are considered vehicles. With SB 172, customers would again only pay the sales tax in the state where they live.
The General Assembly reconvened Tuesday, Jan. 3. Once posted, this bill can be tracked as it moves through the legislative process here.
