Holiday Tournaments Aplenty To Wrap Up 2016
There will be no shortage of games to watch this holiday season. Starting with the week before Christmas, and right into New Year’s Eve and 2017, holiday tournaments at the high school level are scheduled all over the area. We’ll break down the tournaments by sport, with the tourney title, dates and participants.
Basketball
There are over two dozen boys and girls basketball tournaments scheduled over the holiday break that feature teams from the area. Lakeland Christian Academy will host its own boys and girls tournaments, the latter of the two-day event held exclusively at Grace College, Warsaw will host its girls tournament and NorthWood will host their own boys tournament. Warsaw and Tippecanoe Valley will play in the Hall of Fame Classic in New Castle as well. Also a nod to Grace College, which will visit St. Francis on Jan. 4 in a men’s/women’s doubleheader, the St. Francis men are ranked No. 2 in NAIA.

Wrestling:
There are three major tournaments happening during the holiday season, two of which bring some of the top talent in the state to the mats. The IHSWCA Team State features 24 teams from around the state in three classes, including Triton and NorthWood. The Al Smith Classic at Mishawaka is regarded as one of the elite tournaments in high school wrestling, and will have both NorthWood and Warsaw individuals working.
“I expect to see a whole bunch of 1-A teams in the state, just awesome competition,” said Triton head coach Ron Brown of the Team State, where his team will wrestle among eight Class 1-A programs. “I see teams that have four or five individuals that will compete for state championships. The dual series is something the coaches are pushing for again. Wrestling for your team, your community is drastically different than wrestling for yourself in a bracket tournament where it’s individually focused.”
IHSWCA Team State at Memorial Coliseum, Fort Wayne – Dec. 23, 24 teams in three classes; local teams include Penn in 3-A; Culver Academy, Garrett, Jimtown and NorthWood in 2-A; and Central Noble and Triton in 1-A

Part of the lidlifter for area gymnastics, the Blazer Invite hosted by Elkhart Central is the first of several groupings that feed into the Wawasee Sectional. Central has fared well in its own invite, but also features Wawasee in the Lady Warriors’ second scheduled event after competing in last weekend’s LaPorte Pairs.
