Wawasee Sports Wrap: Dec. 17
Gymnastics
The Wawasee gymnastics team started its season Saturday at the annual LaPorte Pairs.
The pair of Reagan Atwood and Jada Parzygnot competed together for the second year in a row. Last year the duo finished 15th but jumped all the way up to third at this year’s competition. They earned an all-around score of 35.000. Alyssa Minnix and Aundreya Wegener placed 8th in the competition with an all-around score of 31.850.
Katelyn Baker and Katie Haines earned 12th place with an all-around effort of 30.250. Coming in 15th overall for Wawasee with a score of 29.750 were Haleigh Smarr and Autumn Yoder.
“Getting two pairs to place inside the top 10 is fantastic,” expressed Wawasee head coach Nika Prather. “Reagan and Jada getting third is great and will give them a lot of confidence starting off the season. There is some great competition at this meet and I feel like we have started our season out on the right foot.”
Wawasee will next compete at the Elkhart Central Invite on Wednesday, Dec. 28.
Wrestling
Wawasee hosted its annual December Super Duals on Saturday. The Warriors worked their way to a second place finish after posting wins over Plymouth, Angola and Manchester.
The Warriors started their day with a bye before falling to Northern Lakes Conference foe Northridge, 46-29. They rounded out their pool play with a win over NLC rival Plymouth, 39-27. Both of those matches count as official conference duals. Wawasee then went on to top Angola 38-28 and would down Manchester in the championship round by a score of 48-36.
Ricardo Romo (106 pounds), Braxton Alexander (120), Germia Brooks (126) and Raymon Torres (152) all went undefeated on the day for the Warriors.
Northridge posted wins over Plymouth (48-31), Wawasee, Manchester (55-15) and Angola (44-23) to take the tourney title.
Wawasee improves to 3-2 in the NLC and 20-6 overall. The Warriors will next wrestle Jan. 5 at NorthWood.
Basketball
The Wawasee freshman boys basketball team moved to 5-1 Saturday with a win over Lakeland 43-37.
Ethan Hardy led Wawasee with 15 points. Michael Hammer scored 14 for the Warriors while Austin Miller added seven.
Wawasee will host Elkhart Memorial Jan. 3 for a 6:30 p.m. tip.
