NorthWood Basketball: Panthers Survive Scare
NAPPANEE – The newly minted No. 1 team in Class 3-A survived a scare Thursday night as the NorthWood Panthers had to fight off Westview, 60-57, in boys buckets at The Pit.
Westview raced out to a 7-0 lead, only for the Panthers to climb back in front, 29-28, at the half. A two-point swing for NorthWood in the third quarter gave the home side a three-point edge, 43-40, going into the final quarter. The game saw seven ties and seven lead changes.
NorthWood guard Vincent Miranda had a career night, dropping 38 points including 12-13 from the free throw line. Miranda also added six rebounds and a steal. Brad Delio chipped in eight points.
Elijah Hales scored 21 points and dished six assists to lead the Warriors while Cody Collyer added 13 points and seven rebounds.
The game was relatively clean, with NorthWood turning the ball over just four times to Westview’s eight turnovers. The largest lead in the game was Westview’s 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
NorthWood rolled in the JV game over Westview by a 57-23 score. Jason Borkholder led the Panthers with 13 points and Luke Holland chipped in 11 points. Dennis Wingard paced Westview with 13 points, six rebounds and four steals.
NorthWood’s freshman team edged Elkhart Memorial 36-34. Trent Edwards led NorthWood with 17 points and Brock Flickinger had eight points and three assists.
Westview, which is ranked No. 10 in Class 2-A, moves to 3-1 overall and hosts Central Noble Saturday night while NorthWood sits at 2-0 with a visit to Fairfield scheduled for Saturday evening.
