Disabled Vet, Service Dog Work Together At Texas Lowes
ABILENE, TEXAS — When applying to a job, you usually wouldn’t bring your furry friend with you. But, for Clay Luthy, a disabled veteran, his story is a little different.
After serving for the Air Force and being stationed in Dyess, Luthy had his final knee surgery and decided that it was time to get a job.
Having a service dog by his side at all times made it difficult for him to find the perfect job. But that didn’t stop him from applying.
Luthy has always been known as a handy man and takes frequent visits to Lowes, so one day he decided to apply to a sales position.
After talking to the Manager, Chris Price, Luthy had an interview.
He wanted to make sure that Charlotte would be able to work by his side, so he informed the Manager beforehand. The manager immediately said to apply and a few weeks later, he got the job.
Luthy and Charlotte have been employed at Lowes for the past two months and love every minute of it. Although he make work part-time, the management along with the rest of the staff make sure that the duo is getting the best possible service while working.
“They schedule me in an area like paint, where Charlotte has a place to sit”, said Luthy.
The best part about this team is that he even made Charlotte her very own work vest, so people can come up and pet her.
“I have a service vest and the vest she wears at work so that people know when they can pet her”, explained Luthy.
The staff say they love Charlotte and are happy that Clay is a part of their team and feel as if this has opened up many other employers eyes about accepting those who need an extra set of, paws!
Although it may seem fun to have a dog with you all day, Luthy tells KRBC that Charlotte has eased his time working by alerting him and allowing him to calm down when times get tough.
