The Warrior grapplers competed at the LaPorte Invite Saturday morning and were served a piece of humble pie. After racing out to a 9-1 record to start its season, Wawasee went 2-3 in the traditionally competitive tournament.
Lafayette Jefferson got the best of Wawasee to start the day, 40-24. Then a pin in the final match against LaPorte left Wawasee on the wrong side of a 37-30 decision. Wawasee was able to get by Knox (60-24) and Hammond (57-24) but suffered another loss to eventual champion Merrillville 48-18. Merrillville is currently ranked No. 16 in the state according to Indiana Mat.
Braxton Alexander went 5-0 for the Warriors at 120 pounds while Garrett Stuckman was also 5-0 at 113 pounds. Jeremiah Dilley (220), Alex Castro (195) and Ricardo Romo (106) were all 4-1.
Wawasee (11-4) next competes Thursday at Goshen.

Wawasee’s freshman girls basketball team picked up its second win of the season Saturday afternoon. The Lady Warriors topped Westview 34-17 to move to 2-1 on the season.
Madison Mottern led Wawasee with 10 points. Lila Gregory, Jadison Rostochak and Emily Davis all had five points each.
“Today we became a team,” said freshman coach Dave Holsclaw.
