Warsaw Basketball: Free Throws Power Tigers To Win
HUNTINGTON – The line was fine to the Warsaw boys basketball team Saturday night.
The Tigers hit crucial free throws late in the game to turn back host Huntington North 44-40 in overtime in a non-conference matchup.
Warsaw, which used a rally in the fourth quarter to force the extra session, hit 8-11 free throws in the overtime period to notch the win.
The Class 4-A No. 5 Tigers, who bounced back from a 13-point loss at Homestead Friday night, finished 21-27 from the line in the win. The host Vikings were just 7-10 from the stripe in the contest.
Senior star Kyle Mangas led the way for Warsaw with a game-high 19 points. The guard hit 8-10 from the line and also had five rebounds for the winners.
Huntington, which falls to 2-2, led 6-5 after the opening period. The game was tied at 18-18 at halftime before the Vikings took a 31-25 lead after the third period of play. Warsaw outscored the hosts 9-3 in the fourth stanza to tie the game.
Jeremy David hit a pair of free throws with 1:21 left in regulation play to tie the game at 34-34. Neither team would score from there in the final period.
Zach Riley gave the Tigers the lead early in the overtime with a bucket and a free throw to make it 37-34. The Tigers then scored their final seven points of the night from the free throw line to seal the win.
Jaceb Burish scored seven points for Warsaw, which moves to 3-1 on the season. David had four points and six rebounds, while Ross Johnson and Riley each had four points, as did Asher Blum.
Warsaw shot 10-30 overall from the field, including 3-9 on 3-point tries. Huntington was 13-34 overall from the field, including a 7-12 effort from deep. The Tigers had a huge 31-15 rebounding advantage in the contest.
Hunter Hollowell led Huntington North with 15 points.
Warsaw won the junior varsity game 52-35. Landen Ferber scored 16 points and Jaylen Reese 12 to pace the winners. Sawyer Stoltz led Huntington North with 12 points.
Warsaw made it a clean sweep with a 48-40 win in the freshman contest. Wyatt Amiss led the Tigers with 15 points. Connor Lennox scored 13 points, while Keagan Larsh had 10 points and nine rebounds and Jaylen Coon three assists for the winners.
Warsaw will host Manchester Thursday night and entertain Lake Central on Friday night. Huntington North will play at Manchester next Saturday night.
