WARSAW – The Warsaw girls and boys soccer teams had members from its rosters selected among the All-District and All-State lists from the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association.
The girls team had a host of awards bestowed upon it this past weekend. Freshman Delaney Taylor as well as sophomore Brenna Shipley and senior Breck Jackson were all selected All-District for District 2. Shipley and Jackson were chosen to play in the District games this past weekend at Indianapolis North Central High School. Award ceremonies were held Sunday in Indianapolis as part of the overall weekend.
Jackson was chosen as First Team All-District, Taylor as First Team All-District honor and Shipley earned Second Team All-District. Jackson was also chosen as Honorable Mention All-State and Taylor was chosen Third Team All-State. Brenna Buhrt was honored as a Top Team Player.
Jackson and Shipley led a defense that had nine shutouts this season for the 16-5 Warsaw team. Jackson scored five goals and eight assists while Shipley had a goal and seven assists. Taylor registered a team-leading 19 goals and program-record 14 assists and Buhrt had nine goals and nine assists.
Warsaw head coach Peter Lucht was elected to serve as District Two Pollster and Representative.
“Every single one of the girls worked hard to help achieve our successful season,” Lucht said. “The four girls that were part of the honors this weekend were girls that were recognized by not only our coaching staff, but also the coaching staff from our District (which extends from Elkhart to Ohio, and from Huntington North to Michigan) and even all over the state.
“Breck Jackson was a leader on the field for us, and helped make sure that we didn’t lose many games this year through her hard-nosed tackling and defensive organization. She earned every bit of her First Team All-District selection and Honorable Mention for the All-State vote. Delaney Taylor achieved a rare feat in not only being selected as First Team All-District as a freshman, but also making the Third Team All-State. I believe there are only two freshman on that list, and both are from our district.
“Brenna Shipley was named Second Team All-District, and is another player that should have received higher honors. She is a shut down defender and a midfield spot. Her best games often coincided with our best defensive games, as the opponents opportunities were really limited.
“And finally, Brenna Buhrt received the Top Team Player award. She is a game-changer, and helped our team dominate the midfield battle in many games. Once she broke through the midfield lines, she was incredibly dangerous in transition, putting defenders on their heels in a race to recover in front of their own goal.
“As for the honors I received, I am humbled and grateful for being selected as the District 2 Pollster and District 2 Representative. I think that being recognized for your abilities and achievements by your peers is something we all strive for (especially those that love to compete), and I am truly thankful.”
The boys team, coached by Frank Courtois, had Eric Ocock and Justus Voss take home awards. The Tiger midfielders had Voss take Top Team Player and Ocock earn Second Team All-District. Voss did not register a goal or assist in 2016, but helped solidify a very potent Warsaw defense that improved tremendously over the course of the season. Ocock led Warsaw, which finished 6-10-2 overall, with 11 goals and had four helpers.
