Whitko Football: Wildcats Topped By County Foe
SOUTH WHITLEY — The Whitko football team found the end of the road Friday night.
The Wildcats hosted county foe Churubusco in just the second meeting between the two teams since 1975. Last year the Wildcats enjoyed a sectional semifinal win over the Eagles, but this year it was Busco that had the last laugh. The No. 13 ranked Eagles left Ryan Huff Field with a 20-6 victory in a Class 2-A Sectional 35 semifinal contest.
The Eagles were led by 273 rushing yards out of junior Garrett Horn. Horn, who had 34 carries on the night, also had one score on the evening. Samuel Richards added 93 rushing yards and a score while Tray Mayer had Busco’s other touchdown.
The Eagles, who lost 34-27 to Whitko in the playoffs in 2015, outgained the hosts 398-212. All of Churubusco’s yards came on the ground as the Eagles did not attempt a single pass in picking up the win.
The big stat of the night was in the turnover department. Whitko had four turnovers in the loss, including three lost fumbles. The Eagles, who had a 21-10 edge in first downs in the win, had just one turnover.
Churbusco led 13-0 at halftime before the Wildcats broke through on a 40-yard touchdown run by Garrett Elder in the third quarter to make it 13-6. Horn then scored on a two-yard run early in the final period to ice the win for the Eagles.
Elder led Whitko on the ground with 142 yards on 21 carries. Hunter Reed was held to just 20 yards on 11 carries for the Wildcats. Collin Craig was 4-8 passing for 44 yards for the home team with one interception.
Elder finished his brilliant senior season with 1,786 yards rushing and 27 touchdowns. Reed gained 1,152 yards on the ground and totaled 13 touchdowns this season for the Wildcats.
Whitko closes its season at 7-4 while Busco improves to 9-2 and will play at South Adams (7-4) next week in the sectional title game. The Starfires upset No. 1 and previously undefeated Woodlan 20-14 Friday night. Woodlan had defeated South Adams 36-3 in a regular-season contest.
