Warsaw Volleyball: Tigers Take Own Tourney Title
WARSAW – It was another strong showing on Saturday for the Warsaw volleyball program.
The varsity squad posted a pair of wins to close the regular season in style by winning its own Tiger Spiker Invitational.
Coach Rick Ashmore’s team beat South Bend Clay 25-12, 25-7, 25-7 in its opener and then topped Tippecanoe Valley 25-16, 25-13, 25-14 in the championship match of the four-team event.
Sophomore standout setter Kacy Bragg had a big day as the Tigers bounced back from a 3-0 loss on Tuesday night to Class 4-A No. 5 ranked Penn. Bragg led her team with 16 kills and also had six digs, five acs, three blocks and 29 assists in the pair of wins.
Cassadi Colbert came up big with 15 kills and Alexie Day added 14. Hanna Leach slammed 10 kills, while Rachel Yeager had seven and Katie Swanson five.
Libero Erin Peugh paced the defense for the champions with 37 digs, Day had 27 digs, while Brynn Durecki finished with nine, Addie Dickerhoff eight, Leach four and Yeager three.
Leach led the serving effort with eight aces. Day had six aces, Durecki four, Peugh three and Dickerhoff two. Leach had eight blocks, while Day had three, Swanson two and Colbert one.
Dickerhoff totaled 21 assists in the two wins.
Warsaw, which improves to 19-13, will face Elkhart Memorial on Thursday in an opening round match of the Class 4-A Warsaw Sectional. The contest is slated to begin at approximately 8 p.m.
Tippecanoe Valley defeated Northfield 25-17, 21-25, 25-16, 18-25, 15-13 in the semifinal to move into the title match versus Warsaw.
The Vikings, who close the regular season at 20-12, will play West Noble on Thursday in the Class 3-A Fairfield Sectional at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The Warsaw junior varsity team ended an outstanding season by going 3-1 to place third in the Northern Lakes Conference Tournament Saturday at Elkhart Memorial.
The JV Tigers, coached by Chandra Hepler, beat Wawasee 23-25, 25-22, 15-13, Northridge 25-11, 25-13 and NorthWood 25-12, 25-21 to move into the title match. Host Elkhart Memorial beat Warsaw 25-21, 25-20 in the finale.
Courtney Chookie piled up 28 kills on the day to lead the Tiger offense. Gwyn Bellamy had 12 kills, while Alicia Sikora had nine, Kenzie Martz eight, McKenna Hawblitzel eight and Emali Grose six.
Hawblitzel totaled 30 digs and Sikora finished with 26. Gabby Hamill had 20, while Amy Herendeen had 19, Chookie 17, Grose 13, Martz nine, Bellamy five and Megan Sullivan, Claire Clements and Naomi Phillips one each.
Hawblitzel led the serving effort with 11 aces. Chookie finished with 10 aces, Bellamy and Herendeen seven each, Grose six and Sikora one. Martz had two blocks and Sikora and Chookie each had one. Sikora totaled 57 assists.
The Warsaw JV team finishes its season 25-4.
