Whitko Football: Title Hopes Dashed by Norsemen
SOUTH WHITLEY — That’s not how they drew it up.
Whitko hosted Northfield Friday night in what was the unofficial Three Rivers Conference North Division championship. The visiting Norsemen entered on a five-game winning streak and made it six in a row following a 34-12 victory at Ryan Huff Field.
Northfield jumped out to a 13-0 lead thanks to a pair of scoring runs from Kjenson Frieden. Frieden finished his night with 108 yards on the ground and three scores.
Whitko finally got on the board in the second quarter, a two-yard run from Garrett Elder. The Wildcats trailed 13-6 at the half.
After the break, Elder found the the end zone once more. This time it was on a 66-yard run. A failed two-point try left Whitko trailing 13-12. Northfield scored 21 unanswered points after that. Frieden, John Schuler and Layne Evans all found pay dirt for the Norsemen.
Elder finished his night with the two scores and a game-high 95 rushing yards. Colin Craig picked up 34 yards on the ground and 23 through the air. Zach Hewitt led the team with 12 receiving yards.
Whitko falls to 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the TRC. The Wildcats will play Peru next week in the TRC playoff. The Tigers lost 43-34 to North Miami. North Miami (8-0, 6-0) and Northfield (7-1, 6-0) will play for the TRC championship.
