Warsaw Community Public Library Remembers Authors Who Have Passed Away
By Laurie Voss Circulation Supervisor
This is the time of year that websites and news stations start reporting on famous people that have passed away. At the Warsaw Community Public Library, we would like to honor those authors who have passed in 2016.
Unfortunately, there have been several over the course of 2016. In date of death order we honor the following leaders in the written world.
Harper Lee, who died Feb. 19, is of course best known for “To Kill a Mockingbird,” the coming-of-age novel set in the South. In 2015 “Go Set a Watchman,” which was written before “To Kill a Mockingbird,” was released to mixed reviews. Mockingbird was also turned into a movie that still endures today.
Pat Conroy died on March 3, in South Carolina. He was best known for “The Prince of Tides,” and “The Great Santini,” both of which were turned into films.
Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel, passed on July 2. During WWII his family was forced into Nazi death camps, but he survived and would later write the best-seller “Night,” which told of his experiences in the camps. Wiesel would write a trilogy of his experiences; the other books being “Dawn” and “Day.”
Tim LaHaye was an Evangelical Minister and co-wrote the “Left Behind” series along with Jerry Jenkins. LaHaye died July 26. Although most famous for the “Left Behind” series, he authored more than 50 books, which address biblical, marriage and family topics.
W. P. Kinsella was a legendary fiction writer who wrote books and poetry. The author of “Magic Time,” and “If Wishes Were Horses,” was best known for “Shoeless Joe,” which was adapted to the movie “Field of Dreams.” Even now, hearing the phrase “If you build it, they will come,” and “Go the distance,” have become such iconic phrases that you automatically think back to the movie. Kinsella died Sept. 16.
Although this is not a complete list, we honor these authors and others, such as Umberto Eco, Jim Harrison and True-Crime writer Michelle McNamara, who also passed in 2016.
The Warsaw Community Public Library welcomes you to check out these authors, either in the written word, or their adapted movies.
