HNAC XC: Watkins, Miller Lead Trojans
WINAMAC – Bailey Watkins had one of his better runs of the season Saturday, leading Triton at the Hoosier North Athletic Conference cross country meet.
Watkins was fourth overall in the boys race, running a 17:23 in leading a quartet of contenders to the line. Watkins held off Winamac’s Joe VonTobel (17:26) and Knox’s Seth Hernandez (17:29).
Caston’s Mitchell Rans was the top runner once again in the conference, the sophomore leading the way in an uncontested 16:26. Teammate Bryan Hernandez-Rios gave the Comets a one-two finish at 17:10 and Michael Beckner of Winamac came home at 17:14.
Winamac won the team title, landing three in the top seven, then taking two spot in the top 30 to finish at 63 points, edging Caston’s 74 points. North Judson (83), Pioneer (97), Triton (105), West Central (112) and Knox (128) completed the team standings.
Triton wrapped up a fifth-place team finish with results from Russell Reichard (13, 18:21), Josiah Page (17, (18:48), Shaun Honeycutt (36, 20:20), Brock Watkins (37, 20:26) along with Ty Perry (39, 20:31) and Jeremiah Goodrich (42, 20:52).
The Triton girls had three runners in the top 20, led by Whytnie Miller and Baylee McIntire.
Miller was 11th in the race at 21:51 in her first conference meet as a freshman while McIntire was just behind Miller in 12th at 21:59. Lady Trojan Briana Wilhite came in 14th at 22:08.
Triton wrapped up its output with Michaela Best (26, 23:32), Abigail Powell (28, 23:35), and Makayla Greenawalt (42, 29:24). The Lady Trojans were fourth of six teams at 85 points. Caston won the girls meet with 59 points, slipping past Pioneer’s 63 points and West Central’s 76 points. Winamac, despite having two runners in the top five, didn’t have the depth and slid to fifth at 100 and North Judson rounded out the list in sixth at 114.
Caston’s Adrianna Dague won the meet at 19:40, with Winamac’s Claire Collins second at 20:15 and Pioneer’s Madison Kiser third at 20:19. West Central’s Camille Wuethrich (20:22) and Winamac’s Blake Bailey (21:00) rounded out the top five.
Triton will run in the Culver Academy Cross Country Sectional next Saturday.
