Warsaw Sports Wrap: Sept. 27
Girls Soccer
A fast start carried the Warsaw girls soccer team to another win Tuesday night.
Delaney Taylor scored a pair of goals in the second minute as the Class 4-A No. 17 Tigers topped Class 1-A No. 8 Argos by a dominating 6-1 final.
Taylor finished with three goals on the night as the hosts won for the 11th straight contest in the non-conference matchup of state ranked teams.
“Our team had one of the best practices of the year yesterday from an intensity standpoint,” noted Warsaw coach Peter Lucht via email. “We were really focused and played hard. I think that some of that mentality translated into the game today as the ladies were ready to rock from the whistle.”
“Argos is a good team. Their #10, Courtney Dunlap, is a special player, and I know that have had a lot of success this year.”
“I think that many of our players had good matches on the evening. Player of the game award goes to Delaney Taylor, who continues to grow as a player into her position. She battled fiercely throughout the contest and who scored three goals on the evening, earning a hat-trick.”
“I feel like we have grown as a team. However, if I could pick an area that I want to see our girls grow in from this game it would be this: never…let…up. We are now into the part of the year where we are going to play teams that will try and battle for 80 minutes. We have to bring the intensity every match and throughout the match and never let up. We scored two goals in the first two minutes, and we scored a goal that was waived off as the buzzer was going off at the end of the game. For all of those minutes in between, we must never let up.”
The Tigers led 3-0 in the contest as Anna Grill scored a goal in the 32nd minute. Warsaw got a pair of second-half goals from Sydney Wiedeman and one more from Taylor.
Brenna Buhrt collected a pair of assists for Warsaw. The quartet of Dayle Harvey, Brenna Shipley, Mariah Rivera and Abby Steffensmeier each had one assist.
Argos won the junior varsity game by a 4-1 final.
The Warsaw varsity improves to 13-3 on the season with the big win. The Tigers will play their regular season and conference finale at Class 2-A No. 10 Northridge on Thursday night. The match will be for the Northern Lakes Conference championship as both teams are 6-0 in league action.
The Tigers will then face Culver Academy next Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in the sectional opener at Warsaw.
Boys Soccer
The Warsaw boys soccer team lost a 5-0 final at Carroll Tuesday night.
The Tigers drop to 5-9-2 on the season with the non-conference loss.
Warsaw won the junior varsity contest by a 1-0 final. Jorge Rico scored for the winners, off an assist by Adam Brown. The Warsaw JV team improves to 9-2 on the season.
Warsaw, which is 2-4 in conference play, will host Northridge in the regular season and Northern Lakes Conference finale on Thursday night. The Tigers will then play Culver Academy at 6 p.m. Monday night in the Plymouth Sectional.
