Concord Stands Tall At Tennis NLC
WARSAW – Concord, paced by a No. 1 singles championship from Will Boyer, won the tournament championship at the Northern Lakes Conference Boys Tennis championships Saturday afternoon.
Boyer, the No. 1 seed in the bracket, outlasted John Gerard of Plymouth 5-7, 7-5, 6-4 in a very competitive final to claim the court championship. The Minutemen also had its other two singles players in championship matches, Alex Serwatka losing to Northridge’s Simon Grevengood 6-1, 5-7, 4-6 at No. 2 singles and Nate Slabach falling to Goshen’s Simon Myers at No. 3 singles 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
The Concord No. 1 doubles team placed third and its No. 2 doubles team was second, with Freddy Buckingham and Jake Lovette losing to Warsaw’s Hayden Steger and Spencer Britton 7-6 (11-9), 6-2.
The Tigers, boosted by its doubles title, came in second to Concord in the standings 47-40. No. 2 Andrew Gauger, No. 3 David Homme and its No. 1 doubles team of Justin Stout and Ryan Wettschurack all finished third for the tournament. Warsaw No. 1 Colton Lind finished fifth.
Goshen and Plymouth tied for third in the tournament with 38 points. The RedHawks claiming a second title at No. 1 doubles with Logan Troyer and Bobby Sessa riding the top seed to a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Plymouth’s Grant Clady and Nick Felke.
Northridge (27), NorthWood (20), Elkhart Memorial (6) and Wawasee (5) rounded out the tournament team standings.
Wawasee’s top performance came from Nathan Perek at No. 3 singles, who placed sixth. The Warriors scored five points in the tournament, but placed seventh overall ahead of Memorial after a head-to-head win over the Chargers in the regular season.
