Harold Berkey
Harold Leroy Berkey, 89, Goshen, went home to be with his Lord at 9:10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016, at his residence. He had been in ill health since August 2015. Harold was born Dec. 25, 1926 in Goshen to Roy B. and Ruth (Bowman) Berkey. On Aug. 6, 1950, he married Marjorie Ellen Klotz at the Nappanee Missionary Church.
Marjorie survives along with a daughter: Patty (Karol) Beachy, Nappanee; sons: Bruce (Sue) Berkey; David (Jenny) Berkey, both of Nappanee; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sister: Mildred (Bud) Schrock. Also Mario (Sarah) DeFrietas, Wakarusa; Angie (Wilfred) Marek, Bremen, Germany; along with others that have stayed in their home and called him Dad; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding in death were his parents; two brothers; and a grandson: Christopher Berkey.
Mr. Berkey was 1945 graduate of Goshen High School. He was drafted that same year and served in the United States Army. Harold worked at Excel in Elkhart, IWC and Stow Davis in New Paris, farmed for many years, and was the delivery man for the Goshen office of Napa Automotive. He served as the sexton of Rock Run Cemetery Board. Mr. Berkey was a member of Millwood Chapel Church, where he served on the church board, sang in quartets and taught Sunday School Class for over 56 years. He was currently a member of South West Bible Church and good friend of Pastor Dave Stump.
Family and friends may call from 2-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at Nappanee Missionary Church and for one hour prior to the Funeral Service which will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, also at the Church. Rev. Dale Brooks, former pastor of Millwood Chapel, will officiate and burial will be in Rock Run Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Wa-Nee Bible in School, Child Evangelism, or Gideons International.
