Valley Sports Wrap: Sept. 6
Boys Tennis
The backyard rivalry flared up again Tuesday as the boys tennis teams from Tippecanoe Valley and Triton met. The Vikings were the better outfit on the day, taking a 4-1 win over the Trojans.
Keith Wright showed resiliency in his win against Mace Eads at one singles, rallying from a 6-2 loss in the first set to come back at 6-1 in the second and taking the extra game in the clincher, 7-5.
Seth Hoffman had little trouble in the No. 2 singles match, beating Aaron Stichter one and one. Both Valley doubles teams won in straight sets, Dakota Parker and Garrett Feldman at No. 1 beating Keygan Mosier and Chase Butler 6-2, 6-3, and the No. 2 team of Chris Schipper and Dylan Sponseller taking care of Grant Eib and Tyler Heckaman 7-6 (2), 6-0.
Triton’s lone win came from Carter Kuntz at No. 3 singles, a one and love result against Eric Wright.
Valley moves to 3-4 on the season, Triton to 4-6 overall. Valley visits Cass Thursday while Triton will entertain South Bend Riley Wednesday.
Volleyball
It was heartbreak for the Tippecanoe Valley volleyball team Tuesday, losing 3-2 at North Miami in a Three Rivers Conference matchup.
North Miami claimed game one 25-16, Valley took game two 25-13, North Miami coming back for game three 25-22, Valley forcing a fifth game after a 25-18 game four, then North Miami holding on for a 17-15 capper.
Sophie Bussard paced Valley with 16 kills, Abby Betten had 19 digs, Emily Peterson had 44 assists, and Hannah Jansma and Shayleigh Shriver each had six aces for the Vikings.
In the JV contest, Valley came through with a 25-11, 20-25, 15-8 triumph. Amy Baca and Gabby Olson each had five kills, Sarah Myers had eight assists and Allison Betten had seven aces.
Valley (10-5, 1-3 TRC) will visit Triton Thursday.
Girls Golf
A long drive for Tippecanoe Valley Tuesday stopped at Meadow Valley in Middlebury for a date with Northridge, Westview and John Glenn. Northridge played its home course well, winning with a 185, followed by Glenn at 200, Valley at 217 and Westview at 243.
Victoria Biddle continued her solid play with a 48 to lead Valley. Makayla Sandbakken shot a 53, Bethany Johnson and Blake McBrier each posted 58s and Jordan Krotke had an 81.
Valley (6-13) will next play Thursday at Peru Municipal in a TRC triangle with Maconaquah and North Miami.
Boys Soccer
An early goal sparked North Miami in a 3-1 win over Tippecanoe Valley Tuesday night.
Connor Hanaway scored in the fifth minute to open the scoring. Valley would equalize in the 34th minute when Harrison Vining found the back of the net off a corner taken by Ivan Santiago.
But a goal in the final minute of the first half by Gozalo Morales gave the Warriors a 2-1 advantage heading into the break.
Hanaway gave his side a two-goal advantage when his effort in the 62nd minute on a penalty kick was true.
Fabian Mar had 12 saves in net for Valley, counterpart Ethan Duff had five for the Warriors.
Valley (2-5, 1-3 TRC) returns to the pitch Sept. 14 against Rochester.
