George R. Eberly
George R. Eberly, 92, of South Whitley, died at 11:40 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2, 2016 at Warsaw Meadows where he had been a resident since March 2015.
He was born Aug. 2, 1924 in Kosciusko County, Indiana a son of Levi and Mary (Mishler) Eberly. His formative years were spent in Richland Township, Whitley County. In 1929 his family moved to Cleveland Township. He completed his education at Larwill High School.
On June 23, 1945 he was united in marriage to Thelma L. Luckenbill. They made their home in Cleveland Township for two years, moving to a farm in Richland Township where they resided 35 years. In October 1989 they moved into South Whitley.
In addition to farming, George was a bus driver for 23 years for Larwill and Whitko schools.
He was a member of Spring Creek Church of the Brethren, a Richland Township Precinct Committeeman, past president of Larwill Lions Club of which he was a member for over 50 years, served on the Larwill Squawbuck Days committee and Larwill Community Board.
Surviving include his wife of 71 years, Thelma; six children, Anne K. (Terry) Walker of South Whitley, Judy J. (Larry) Sechrist of Larwill, Linda G. (Robert) Jeffries of South Whitley, Steven G. (Kathy) Eberly of South Whitley, Debra J. (Kevin) Shoemaker of South Whitley and Jill C. Eberly of Warsaw; 16 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; six step great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; four step great great grandchildren; three brothers, Ray Eberly of North Manchester, Lee Eberly of South Whitley and Dean Eberly of South Whitley; and a sister, Glee Rule of Columbia City.
He was preceded in death by a grandson; a step granddaughter; and a sister, Phyllis Birtwhistle.
The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley. The burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
