Glenn J. Hogue,
Glenn J. Hogue, 83, rural Columbia City, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, at 4:50 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, 2016. He had valiantly fought his declining health for the past year and remained optimistic and cheerful to the end. As a former U.S. Navy Sailor, he has completed his orders and his soul has “weighed-anchor,” now navigating blue sky and calm waters; a faithful and dutiful servant.
He was born July 2, 1933 in Charleston, W.V. a son of the late Andrew O.B. and Ruth (Middlebrook) Hogue. Glenn grew up in West Virginia where he attended Greenbrier Military School, Lewisburg, W.V. and completed high school at Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, W.V.
In 1953 he joined the U.S. Navy. After training in electronics, he served on the destroyer USS Southerland as a radar operator. He was honorably discharged in 1957. Following his naval service, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and TriState (Trine) University, Angola.
On Oct. 28, 1960 he was united in marriage to Martha B. Brock. They made their home at Wolf Lake. In 1965, they moved to their current home north of Columbia City.
He retired from Group Dekko Corporation as a ‘research and development’ toolmaker in 1988. Glenn had an inventor’s ceaseless passion for gadgets, inventions, inventing, and design. Anyone speaking with Glenn quickly understood his love for numbers and fervent passion for understanding history. He held several patents. With his accomplished mechanical ability, he built their current home. Glenn was a loving, tender father and husband. Mostly Glenn was his family foundation and glue for 57 years
Surviving include his loving spouse of 55 years, Martha “Marty”; children: Glenn J. (Patti) Hogue, Columbia City; Robin (Harry) Imoto, Clarksville, Tenn.; Ruth “Marie” (Reuben) Aker, Columbia City; and Dr. Andrew (Laura) Hogue, Fort Wayne; grandchildren: Kayla (Brett) Brown, Lauren and Tara Imoto, Natalie and Eden Aker, Courtney, Chloe, Lydia, Camille, and Lucille Hogue; two great grandchildren: Mila Kratzer and Brecken Brown; importantly and meaningfully, a sister: Dorothy (Emmitt) Nicholas, Milton, W.V.; nephews: Drs. David (Jane) Nicholas, Robert (Rebecca) Nicholas; and a niece: Susan (Doug) Korstanje.
The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with visitation from 2 p.m. until the service Sunday. The Korean War Veterans Honor Guard will present military honors.
