Grace Golfers Set Mark In Season Opener
PLYMOUTH – The 2016 season could not have started better for the Grace College women’s golf team.
The Lady Lancers set a program record for lowest round in the Ancilla Invitational at Swan Lake Golf Course.
Grace shot a 326 as a team on Wednesday, shattering the previous of 358 which was set in 2015 during the program’s first year of collegiate competition.
Additionally, freshman Sydney Abbott became the first Lady Lancer to break 80 in a round. She set a program record with 77 to lead Grace’s team.
Wednesday’s tournament involved Grace and Ancilla. The meet had a length rain delay midway through the afternoon, and the round was not finished until practically sundown.
“It’s clear the girls have been really working over the summer. Sydney’s [Abbott] 77 was truly remarkable considering the long delay, wet conditions and finishing in near complete darkness,” said Grace head coach Denny Duncan. “We are really young, but these girls are competitors so I expect them to get better throughout the year. I think we will surprise a lot of people this year.”
Another freshman Anna Marshall was second for Grace with an 81, and sophomore Lauren Keiser was just behind with an 82.
Libby Tully shot an 86, and Paige Shearer carded 93. Additionally, Stevie Luebbert (93) and Kate Adams (98) had their season openers.
The Lady Lancers have another tournament on Friday with the IU East Invitational.
