North Webster Cemetery Walk Official Bicentennial Project
NORTH WEBSTER — The upcoming 10th annual North Webster Cemetery Walk has received official endorsement as an Indiana Bicentennial Legacy Project from the Indiana Bicentennial Commission. The Cemetery Walk, scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, is sponsored by the North Webster Community Public Library’s Local History and Genealogy Center.
To qualify for endorsement, a project or program must be relevant to Indiana history and its bicentennial, culturally inclusive, create a lasting legacy, celebratory, engaging and inspiring to youth, and open and accessible to the public, among other criteria.
The annual North Webster Cemetery Walk is a living history event recognizing departed citizens who have helped build the heritage of the local community. “By looking at the past, we hope to give thought to how we today are shaping our community for future generations,” explained Beth Smith, director of the Local History and Genealogy Center. “It is these everyday individuals whose lives and collective histories comprise the history and legacy of local communities throughout Indiana.”
During this free annual event, the North Webster Library conducts guided walking tours through the nearby cemetery where costumed enactors portray individuals buried there, telling their life stories and recounting local history. This year, 13 individuals will be remembered.
The tours leave from the library every 15 minutes to walk the short distance to the cemetery. Golf cart shuttles are available to those who have difficulty walking. Musical entertainment and refreshments are part of this event, which is free and open to the public.
The library is located inside the North Webster Community Center, 301 N. Main St. (SR 13).
