Nisly: New laws benefiting Hoosier veterans
Dear Editor,
Indiana’s General Assembly took important new steps this year to support Hoosier veterans, and we continue to look for ways to back the men and women who defend our freedom.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Indiana has the second-lowest unemployment rate for veterans in the nation. At 2.4 percent, this figure reflects our strong business climate and the pro-veterans attitude many employers share across our state. To continue helping our veterans find meaningful employment, I supported a new law waiving hiring-age restrictions for veterans who apply to become police officers and firefighters after retiring from 20 years of military service. Policymakers also enacted a new law expediting the issuance or renewal of licenses, certificates, registrations or permits to military spouses. This law helps military families who have transferred to our state join the workforce more quickly and efficiently.
In addition, the General Assembly passed legislation providing service members and their families the care and protections they have rightfully earned. I voted to expand eligibility for Indiana’s Military Family Relief Fund, which provides temporary financial assistance to pay for qualified essentials like food, housing and medical services. I also supported a new law doubling the amount of money dedicated to funeral expenses for Indiana National Guard members who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
Unfortunately, there are instances when Hoosier veterans pass away without family members to arrange a funeral. To ensure these heroes receive a burial recognizing their commitment to our country, I voted for legislation tasking the Indiana Department of Veterans’ Affairs to work with veteran service organizations and funeral directors to ensure the unclaimed remains of deceased veterans are given a proper burial. Lawmakers also made it illegal to fraudulently represent oneself as active duty military or a veteran – a practice known as ‘stolen valor’ – with the intent to obtain benefits.
We owe so very much to our veterans, and I hope that all of you join me in calling on our federal members of Congress to do more for them. At the same time, I’m committed to continuing to find ways to show our appreciation and gratitude for their sacrifice. As always, please contact me with questions or input at (317) 234-2993 or [email protected].
Respectfully,
State Rep. Curt Nisly
