Steele, Rose Lift Cubs To Victory
SOUTH BEND – Justin Steele and Matt Rose each had big games as the South Bend Cubs defeated the Great Lakes Loons, 5-2, Sunday afternoon at Four Winds Field.
Roberto Caro delivered a two-run triple down the right field line that pushed the South Bend lead to 4-1. Andruw Monasterio (error) and Adonis Paula (single) scored on Caro’s second triple of the season. Caro crossed home plate on an RBI single by Connor Myers to extend the South Bend advantage to 5-1.
Justin Steele pitched a solid contest for South Bend, as the Mississippi native picked up the win after six innings of one-run baseball. Steele (4-1) scattered six hits and struck out six.
John Williamson threw a scoreless seventh inning while Scott Effross took care of the final six outs, three of those strikeouts.
Matt Rose staked South Bend to a 2-1 lead with a fourth inning home run into the front row of the left field bleachers. Rose now has seven home runs this season in 53 games for South Bend. The Georgia State product also doubled and scored in the second inning for the Cubs.
Great Lakes starter Leonardo Crawford worked 5.2 innings, giving up just two earned runs, but South Bend was able to touch up reliever Ivan Vieitez for the three runs in the seventh.
South Bend (69-43) and Great Lakes (47-65) will meet again Monday night at 7:05 p.m.
