Dorothy Jane (Lawrence) Hammel
Dorothy Jane (Lawrence) Hammel, 88, formerly of Plymouth, living in Indianapolis for the past 11 years, passed away on July 28, 2016, in Zionsville Meadows with her loving family by her side. Dorothy was a three time cancer survivor.
She was born on January 26, 1928, in Plymouth, to Grover and Erma (Cummins) Lawrence on the family dairy farm where she learned to milk cows around the age of 12. On February 3, 1948, Dorothy became the bride of Thomas Hammel. Together they raised their two children, Diane and Steve who were raised on her childhood farm.
The family always had huge vegetable and flower gardens. Dorothy was very talented in sewing, and made all of her children’s school clothes. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, embroidery, quilting and jigsaw puzzles. She and Tom traveled to Hawaii, England, France, Germany, Switzerland and several attractions in the States. Dorothy was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of Plymouth.
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband of 68: Tom; their son: Steve (Mary) Hammel of Argos; their daughter: Diane Hammel of Indianapolis; also surviving are Dorothy’s grandchildren: Scott Hammel and Brenda Anderson.
Dorothy is preceded in passing by her grandchildren: Todd Bull and Susan Marie Hammel.
The Van Gilder Funeral Home is honor to be caring for the Hammel family and wish to express our deepest heartfelt condolences to Dorothy’s family. A funeral service for Dorothy will be held in the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street Plymouth, on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, at noon with Chaplain Alex Jack officiating. Burial will follow the service in the New Oakhill Cemetery.
A time of visiting with the Hammel family will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday, August 2, at the Van Gilder Funeral Home.
