Bees Stay Buzzing, Sting Cubs
SOUTH BEND – The Burlington Bees (46-50) won their seventh game in a row, knocking off the South Bend Cubs (57-38), 7-5, at Four Winds Field.
After South Bend took the lead in the first inning, the Bees quickly tied it up in third inning. With Tanner Lubach on first with two outs, Brendon Sanger roped a double, his 20th of the season, into right center, scoring Lubach, tying the game at one. The Bees took their first lead of the game in the fourth. Brennon Lund walked and then stole second and third base. Jordan Zimmerman singled up the middle, scoring Lund, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead.
South Bend tied in the bottom of the fourth inning on an Eddy Martinez homer. The game remianed knotted until the seventh. Jordan Serena started the frame with a bunt single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Tanner Lubach picked up his first double of the night, sending a ball into left center, scoring Serena, giving the Bees the lead back at 3-2.
After South Bend tied it again in the seventh, the Bees got the lead back in the eighth. Brendon Sanger started the inning with a single and moved to second on a ground out. After a wild pitch moved Sanger to third, Brennon Lund singled to right, scoring Lund, giving the Bees a 4-3 advantage.
Carlos Sepulvedo started the bottom of the eighth with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Donnie Dewees walked, Eloy Jimenez flew out to left for the second out. Eddy Martinez his high drive to left that was lost in the lights, dropping in for a triple, scoring two runs, putting the Cubs on top, 5-4.
The Bees weren’t done, sending eight batters to the plate in the ninth. With one out, Jordan Serena tripled. After Jared Walsh walked, Tanner Lubach doubled down the left field line, scoring Serena, tying the game at five. A wild pitch gave the Bees the lead, scoring Walsh. Jake Yacinich added to lead, singling in Lubach, upping the Bees’ lead to 7-5.
Sam Holland (5) came on in the ninth and closed the door, earning the save, securing the Bees’ 7-5 win. Aaron Cox (3-1) picked up the win while John Williamson (0-1) was charged with the loss.
