Clinton Wins Busy Fifth
CLINTON, Iowa – Fans who stayed put for the fifth inning of Friday night’s game were treated to the only runs of the game. Clinton fans were especially pleased with how the inning turned out in a 4-2 victory over the South Bend Cubs.
The Lumberkings scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the fifth, answering the Cubs only two runs it would score on the night in the top half of the frame.
South Bend (55-36) got its pair on a two-run triple by Bryant Flete, who drove in Andruw Monasterio and Josh Silver. Monasterio reached on a single and Silver a walk.
Clinton (55-37) opened the bottom of the fifth with three straight singles, the third by Rayder Ascanio bringing home the first run. Rafael Fernandez drove in another run with a single, then stole second that allowed Ascanio to steal home. Dalton Kelly brought Fernandez home on a sacrifice fly to end the home scoring.
Luiz Gohara (2-0) struck out nine in six innings, holding the Cubs five hits and a walk. Spencer Herman worked the ninth for his third save.
Kyle Miller took the loss (4-2) for South Bend, striking out five in five innings of work.
South Bend will visit Kane County for a three-game set starting Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
